Bromley Green, Kent. Vacuum Sewerage System – Valve and Pod Replacement
Client: Southern Water. Main Contractor: MGJV
Background: This site suffered from high ground water levels after heavy rainfall and issues with the existing vacuum valves, which did not work effectively when they became inundated during times of heavy rainfall/high groundwater and consequently failed in the open position, this had an effect not only on the individual properties (flooding) but the whole vacuum system. Onsite Tankering had been required for extended periods of time during the wetter months. Southern Water was offered a trial of one of our QuaVac valves at another site which was suffering from similar issues, after 13 weeks it was agreed that the results were very encouraging and this option would be utilised at Bromley Green.
Design Solution: After undertaking an initial survey of the site the following works were proposed:
- Replacement of 35 No. Existing Pod chambers, including removal of the existing chamber and valve
- lnstallation of new QuaVac Vacuum valves in new pods
- lnstallation of sealed manhole covers to each individual pod chamber
- Re-connection of all existing laterals
- Provision of telemetry to enable monitoring of pod operation
The work was in the property gardens / driveways and it was paramount that each replacement was kept as tight and as tidy as possible.
Upon receipt of the order to undertake the works, the relevant permissions were sought and work commenced on the agreed date and was completed at least a week earlier than programmed, additional work was instructed and this was completed during the originally programmed works.
Due to the success of the new system we have now secured further works on other sites for Southern Water.
